The Vineyard- January 24, 2016

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Luke 4:1-13
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-         Conquering Hunger
o   Hunger can lead us astray, because we hunger for a lot of things.
o   When you are tempted, remember that even after 40 days of fasting, Jesus didn’t allow hunger to lead him into sin.
o   How does the word of God sustain us even more than bread or physical food?
-         Embracing Service
o   Satan offered Jesus what was rightfully his, power over all the kingdoms of the earth.
o   Jesus wasn’t simply interested in getting what was his, but cared how he received it.  He would not receive it from Satan.
o   Jesus embraced a life of service rather than a life of world power.  What do we crave in our life?  Do you long for power, or to be a servant like Christ?
-         Pass the Test
o   Satan tried to get Jesus to test God, but Jesus knew that it was really him who was being tested.
o   Jesus was secure in his knowledge that he was God’s Son, and that God loved him.
o   How does being secure in our identity in Christ, and in the knowledge that God loves us help us in times of temptation?
Praise God for sustaining us with his word!
Thank God for sending Jesus among us not as someone seeking power, but as a humble servant.
Pray for security in knowing that God loves you, and for wisdom in living as God would have you to live as a Christ-follower.
Consider this verses:
“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:14-16 ESV)
