The Vineyard- March 24, 2013

The Vineyard
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Luke 19:28-40
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of his word.
Read the passage
-          What things do you notice about Jesus?
o   Is this how you would expect the Messiah to enter Jerusalem, on a colt?  Why or why not?
o   What does it mean for Jesus to be king?  How does that change our world?  Our church?  Us as individuals?
-          What things do you notice about the disciples?
o   Why do you think the owner of the colt so easily gives up their animal for Jesus’ use?
o   Who actually places Jesus on the colt?  What do you think this means?
o   Who does it say proclaimed Jesus entry into Jerusalem?
-          How do you proclaim Jesus as king in your life?  Is he truly the Lord of the decisions you make, and of what you make a priority in your life?
-          Can you honestly say that you are a disciple of Jesus Christ?  The disciples wouldn’t have been able to proclaim Jesus, if they hadn’t first followed him.  Is your proclamation empowered by your discipleship?
Pray:
-          That your life will reflect the fact that Jesus is king
-          That you will be able to joyfully give of your possessions, and yourself, when “the Lord has need of them”

The Vineyard- March 17, 2013

The Vineyard
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Psalm 22
Read vv. 1-21
-          What ways do you see David describing the troubles he experiences?
-          Does any of this imagery resonate with you?
-          What imagery would you use to describe your troubles, past or present, to God?
Read vv. 22-31
-          How has the mood changed from the first twenty-one verses, to these verses?
-          What do you think accounts for this change in mood?
-          What in your life has helped you transition from periods of lament, to periods of praise?
What do you think it means for us, that we find in the same psalm both intense lament as well as hopeful praise?
What does it mean to know that Jesus lived this experience out, just as we live it out?

The Vineyard- March 3, 2013

The Vineyard
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Luke 5:27-39
- Levi has a bad reputation as a tax-collector, and yet he leaves everything behind to follow Jesus.  Have you ever been surprised by the reaction of someone you had written off as “bad”?  What does that teach you about judging others?
- Levi throws a feast for Jesus, and Jesus’ disciples are criticized for feasting rather than fasting.  Is your relationship with Jesus more like a feast, or a fast?  Is it marked by joy and celebration, or sorrow and sacrifice?
- Levi and the group he hangs out with are labeled as “sinners” by the Pharisees and scribes.  What they don’t know is that they have accepted Jesus’ call to discipleship.  Have you ever judged someone based on past reputation, without realizing that they have changed?
