The Vineyard- September 29, 2013

The Vineyard
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Genesis 15:1-21
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          Conversing with God
o   When is the last time you had a sustained conversation with God (not just a quick blessing before a meal)?
o   Do you feel comfortable enough in your faith that you can complain to God?
o   Why do you think God blesses Abram directly after Abram’s complaint?  How do you think our willingness to be honest with God grows our trust in him?
-          Imagining with God
o   When Abram look at the stars, he is reminded both of the scope of God, and the scope of God’s promise.  What places or images remind you of our God’s might and power?
o   When Abram sees God take part in the covenant ceremony, he is reminded of God’s work.  What images remind you of God’s work in our world, and your life?
Pray that we will have a faith that is strong enough, and honest enough to “complain” to God.
Pray that we will be reminded of God’s faithfulness, and that God will help us imagine the future he has promised us.

The Vineyard- September 22, 2013

The Vineyard
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Genesis 14:1-24
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          Faith Risks for Others
o   Abram takes a great risk, even putting his life in jeopardy, to save his nephew Lot.  Would you risk so much for someone who had taken what was rightfully yours?
-          Faith is a Mutual Blessing
o   What people of faith has God placed in your path?
o   What encouragement do you receive from these people of faith?
-          Faith is its Own Reward
o   Abram doesn’t accept the offer of loot after his victory.  Why do you think that is?
o   How is faith its own reward for Abram?  How is it its own reward for you?
Pray that we will have a faith that is willing to take risks for others.
Pray that God will use our faith to bless others, and that God will place people in our lives whose faith blesses us.
Pray that we will understand faith in God to be its own reward, and that it will be our chief source of hope and joy.

The Vineyard- September 15, 2013

The Vineyard
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Psalm 117
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          Praise the Lord
o   What does it mean to praise the Lord as a nation, and as a people?
-          The Steadfast Love of the Lord
o   Why do we say that the Lord’s love is steadfast?
o   In what ways has God demonstrated his steadfast love?
-          The Faithfulness of the Lord
o   How has God demonstrated his faithfulness to us?
o   How might we demonstrate our faithfulness to God?
o   How are steadfast love and faithfulness related?
Consider how you might praise the Lord both in worship on Sundays, and throughout the week.
Pray that we will keep the steadfast love of the Lord at the front of our minds.
Pray that we will remember the faithfulness of the Lord, and return that faithfulness and love to God and others.

The Vineyard- September 8, 2013

The Vineyard
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Genesis 13:1-18
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          Beginning with worship
o   Abraham gets his life back on track when he returns to the altar, and renews his worship of Yahweh.
o   Do you place importance on beginning your week with worship?
o   How do you begin each day with God?
-          Faith in poverty and prosperity
o   Society would have us believe that prosperity solves all of our problems.  However, with “more stuff” can come more problems, or at least different ones.
o   How do we ensure our focus stays on God, whether we are struggling to have enough, or struggling because we have too much?
-          People over possessions
o   Abraham demonstrates that people are more important than possessions, when he gives the best part of the Promised Land to Lot.
o   Would you be willing to part with possessions if it brought peace to your relationships with others?
Pray that worship will set the tone for our lives.
Pray that we will have faith in the good times and the bad.

Pray that we will value other people more than our possessions.

The Vineyard
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Genesis 12:1-20
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          Our Faith
o   What do you see Abraham’s faith requiring of him in this story?
o   In what ways is Abraham successful in living out his faith?
o   In what ways does Abraham fail in living out his faith?
o   In what ways is God calling you to live out your faith as Abraham did?
-          God’s Faithfulness
o   What does God promise Abraham, even before Abraham has done anything to demonstrate faith?
o   What is God’s response, even when Abraham fails in his faith?
o   What does it mean to you that God forgives and blesses despite our imperfection?
Pray that we will have faith like Abraham’s, that causes us to take risks in order to go where God is calling us, and be who God wants us to be.
