The Vineyard- October 27, 2013

The Vineyard
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Genesis 19:1-38
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          Understanding our sinfulness
o   Are you quick to judge others sins, especially if they are different from your own?
o   What does it mean to you, when you think about the fact that we all deserved to be condemned by God?
-          Understanding God’s grace
o   Do you feel like you can relate to Lot in some ways?
o   Have you ever been reluctant to except God’s salvation?
o   Do you fully understand that God saves us despite ourselves, not because of ourselves?
-          Embracing salvation AND sanctification
o   The tragedy of Lot’s story is that he was saved, but he failed to learn anything from the experience, or to embrace the life that God had preserved for him.
o   Do you ever find yourself looking backward at your old sinful lifestyle, rather than forward toward what God wants for you?
Pray that we will be convicted both of our great sinfulness, and also of God’s great grace toward us.

Pray that we will embrace salvation and live our lives as a sanctified people.

The Vineyard- October 20, 2013

The Vineyard
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Genesis 18:1-33
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          The person of faith is hospitable
o   How do you show hospitality to others?
o   Do you show hospitality to strangers and to those incapable of paying you back or returning the favor in some way?
-          The person of faith instructs
o   How do you instruct your children, grandchildren, or others around you about who Jesus is, and what it means to follow Him?
o   What example do you set as a Christian?
-          The person of faith intercedes
o   What is your attitude toward those caught in lifestyles of sin and self-destructive behavior?  Are you glad to see them “get what they deserve”?  Or, do you pray for opportunities to share with them about God’s mercy and grace?
o   How often do you pray for your enemies, and for those who need to come to repentance?  Does your heart break for these people?
Pray that we will show hospitality, especially to those who are incapable of returning the favor in any way.
Pray that we will seize every chance to instruct others, through our words and deeds, about Christ.

Pray that we will intercede for the sinners of our world with compassionate hearts.

The Vineyard- October 13, 2013

The Vineyard

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Genesis 17:1-27

Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.

Read the passage.

-          Alternatives to Faith

o   Are you ever tempted to try to solve things on your own, rather than trusting God?  Do you trust more in your own good deeds for salvation, or in God’s grace?

-          Our Response to Divine Initiative

o   God takes the initiative with Abraham by giving the covenant, just as he takes the initiative with us by sending Jesus to die on the cross.  How might we respond to God’s initiative?

o   Are you ever tempted to see things like baptism and obedience, our responses to God’s grace, as ways we “earn” something?

-          God is the Good News

o   Sometimes we see the promise of an heir, or of land as the crown jewel of God’s covenant with Abraham, but in reality the cornerstone of the covenant is God’s simple promise “I will be their God”.  Do we ever place more emphasis on the gifts of God, rather than God himself?

Pray that we will accept God’s grace, rather than seek alternatives based on our own will or merits.

Pray that our response to God’s grace will be inward as well as outward.

Pray that we will cherish God as the greatest gift of all.

The Vineyard- October 6, 2013

The Vineyard
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Genesis 16:1-16
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          Falling short of Faith
o   Have you ever fallen short of having faith, as Sarai did?   In what ways have you tried to take matters into your own hands?
o   Have you ever been so focused on your own goals or dreams, that you hurt others trying to make them a reality?
o   What does it say to the world when we as people of faith abuse others?  What does it say if we abuse them in the name of “faith”?
-          Wounded by Faith
o   Have you ever been abused or hurt by someone else who was pursuing their dreams at your expense?
o   God sent an angel to meet Hagar in the wilderness.  Has God ever met you in a difficult time, and offered you reassurance?
o   If you were hurt by a person or people of faith, how did you keep that from damaging your own faith?
Pray that we will never become so obsessed with ourselves and our own dreams that we hurt others deeply.

Pray that we will offer a gracious and supportive community to those who have been deeply wounded by others.
