The Vineyard

Matthew 1:18-25

Pray that God will speak to you through the reading of His word.

-          Desiring Justice

o   Joseph was a righteous man, to the extent that his desire for justice didn’t lead him to vengeance.  Through the angel sent by God, he learns that in fact he hasn’t been wrong at all.  Do we desire justice, or vengeance when we are wronged?  Do we still show concern even for those whom we think have wronged us?

-          Jesus

o   Jesus’ name comes from “Yahweh saves”, and points to his mission to save us from our sins.  While others were more concerned with the restoration of national glory, God was concerned with the state of the peoples’ hearts.  How concerned are you about the sin in your life?

-          Immanuel

o   Immanuel means “God with Us”, which is a reminder that Jesus will always be present in our world, even unto the “end of the age”.  How is Jesus present in your life?

Pray that justice will always be done. 

Thank God for a Messiah who cleanses us of our sins. 

Thank God for the continued presence of Christ in our lives.

Matthew 1:1-17

Pray that God will speak to you through the reading of His word.

-          The One, True King

o   The several references to David, as well as the direct reference to Jesus as the Son of David, drive home the point that Jesus is David’s rightful descendant.  Herod and his family were not descendants of David, and thus imposters.  Is Jesus king in your life, or is there an imposter sitting on the throne?

-          Jewish…and Gentile?

o   Jesus was Jewish, being a descendant of Abraham himself.  And yet, there are a few surprising Gentiles who are mentioned as being part of Jesus’ family tree.  Who might we be surprised to see God using in a powerful way? 

-          Genesis: The Sequel

o   Matthew uses the word genesis, and echoes a phrase found in Genesis.  By doing so the point is that in Jesus, the Messiah, there is re-creation, a new beginning.  Have you found your new beginning in Christ?

Pray that Christ will be the king of your life. 

Reflect on the surprising ways God has acted in your life, and in our world.   

Pray that we will find or new beginning in Christ.

Pray that God will speak to you through the reading of His word.

-          Cleaning House

o   Jacob instructs his house to bury their idols to foreign gods.  What idols do we have in our life that need to be buried?  Would you be willing t bury some of the things that compete with God for your devotion?

-          Living and Dying

o   Life and death happen in the same context.  Rachel gives birth to Benjamin, even as she herself is dying.  How does your faith allow you to make it in a world where both life and death are realities?

-          United in Loss

o   We find Isaac and Ishmael together as they bury Abraham, and the same can be said for Jacob and Esau as they bury Isaac.  How does loss help us see the bigger picture of what is truly important in life?

Pray for the desire and willingness to give up the idols in your life that are competing with God for your devotion. 

Pray for a strong faith, that allows you to endure the good times and the bad, through life and through death.

Look for the common, important things in life that bring us together in love and harmony.

Genesis 34:1-31

Pray that God will speak to you through the reading of His word.

-          Purity Resides in the Heart

o   The text refers to Dinah as a victim, and never implies that as the victim she has sinned in any way.  People can take a lot of things from us, but they can never take our purity, for it resides in the heart.  When God looks in your heart, does he find purity there?

-          The Ease of Appeasement

o   Jacob acts in a way that seeks to appease those who have wronged his daughter in a serious way.  Jacob finds in time that ignoring a wrong doesn’t make it go away.  Is there a wrong in your life that you are trying to ignore?

-          The Violence of Vengeance

o   Their anger at Dinah being wronged leads Dinah’s brothers to take vengeance upon not just Dinah’s assailant, but against everyone.  How does refusing to deal with an issue create more problems?

Pray for a pure heart, and the ability to judge others according to their heart rather than physical realities or histories. 

Pray for courage to confront injustices in a fair, truthful way. 

Pray for the ability to reject violence and vengeance as a means of obtaining justice.

James 1:1-21

Pray that God will speak to you through the reading of His word.

-          Thankfulness in Trials

o   We have a God who can bring something good even out of the bad things in life.  We might not be able to rejoice over our trials, but we can rejoice that God uses trials to make us better people. 

-          What defines us?

o   James says that the poor should find joy in knowing that they are rich through Christ, and that the rich should be humbled by the transitory nature of their wealth and their very lives.  Does your relationship with God define you, or does your wealth?   

-          A Good God Giving Good Gifts

o   God is not the source of evil, but he is the source of good.  Every good gift is from God.  How often do you thank God for those gifts?

Pray for the ability to be thankful in trials, even though we can’t be thankful for them. 

Pray that we will be defined by our relationship with God, rather than our wealth and possessions. 

Praise God for His goodness, and the good gifts he showers upon us.
