The Vineyard- December 27, 2015

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Luke 2:21-40
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          The Example of Joseph and Mary
o   Luke is quite clear that Mary and Joseph were pious parents, who did all they could to fulfill the law.
o   Are we, like Mary and Joseph, providing an example of piety and devotion to God for our children?
-          Jesus- divisive and universal
o   Jesus is a divisive person, causing some to rise and others to fall.  He even causes divisions among friends and family.
o   Will you rise by accepting Jesus, or fall because you rejected him?
o   Jesus is also universal, bringing salvation to the ends of the earth.
-          Striving to be pious
o   None of us are perfect, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be pious.
o   Simeon’s piety is described as his being devout, righteous, and waiting for the consolation of Israel.
o   Do we strive to be devout, or devoted to God; to be righteous in our living, and do we waiting anxiously for Jesus return?
o   God uses all types of pious people- olders like Zechariah, Elizabeth, Simeon, and Anna; and younger ones like Joseph and Mary.  How might God use you?
Strive to follow Joseph and Mary’s example of devotion to God.
Strive to be pious, even if you can’t always be perfect.

The Vineyard- December 20th, 2015
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Luke 2:1-20
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          The World’s a Stage
o   Luke places the entry of Jesus into our world within the broader context of human history.  It takes place within a corner of the Roman Empire, in the small town of Bethlehem.
o   God works and acts in human history, even to this day.  What does it mean to have a God interested in the daily events of our lives, rather than one who remains detached?
-          Who reigns?
o   The story presents to us competing claims.  On the one hand, Caesar reigns as emperor over the empire, issuing decrees.  But on the other, one who is proclaimed from heaven as savior is born in a humble manger.
o   We must ponder the question, does power ultimately rest with emperors, or with the humble Son of God?
o   Does authority belong to the one who sits on a throne in Rome, or the one who hangs on a cross outside of Jerusalem?
-          Whom shall we serve?
o   Caesar, and the world, continues to make claims on our lives.  The world expects us to care about the things that it tells us to care about.  It expects us to strive for the things it considers important.
o   All the while, Jesus expects us not only to praise him on Sunday, but to follow him in taking up our cross?
o   Whom shall we serve, the world and Caesar, or Jesus?
Praise God for acting in our world, by sending his Son Jesus to live among us.
Pray that the world will give its allegiance not to human rulers, but to the Son of God who died for us.
Pray for the willingness and ability to devote yourself to serving Christ each and every day.

The Vineyard- December 13th, 2015
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Luke 1:57-80
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          God visits us
o   God has often visited his people to bring about their salvation.  When the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt, God visited them to bring about their salvation.
o   Zechariah sings about how God has visited his people with the birth of Jesus.  How has God visited us in the life of Christ?
o   How has God visiting us in the person of Jesus Christ brought about our salvation?
-          What God has done…and is doing
o   The birth of Jesus is the continuation of God’s work in our world, the fulfillment of many promises given and made in the Old Testament.
o   What promises of God does Jesus’ fulfill?
o   How did Jesus’ life continue God’s work in our world?  What did it accomplish?
-          Our response
o   Like John, our job is to proclaim what God has done in Jesus Christ.
o   One way we do that is by worshipping God all of our lives, in righteousness and holiness.  What efforts do you make to live each day in righteousness and holiness?
o   What role does God play in our living righteous and holy lives?
o   Another of our responses is to follow Jesus in the way of peace.  Do your words and actions promote peace among others, or do they stir up strife and division?
Praise God for visiting us in the form of Jesus Christ his Son!
Spend time studying Jesus, and the promises that his coming fulfilled.
Pray for the ability to live righteous and holy lives each and every day, and to follow Jesus in the way of peace.

The Vineyard- December 6th, 2015
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Luke 1:39-56
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          Focusing on God
o   Elizabeth praises Mary for her faith and how God will use her.
o   Mary though, turns the focus onto God, for he is the one who will really accomplish all of these things.
o   Rather than praising ourselves, it is better to let others praise us, and then use that as an opportunity to give God the glory.
-          What God has done for me
o   Mary begins her song of praise by stating what God has done for her.  He has used her despite her lowly nature.
o   How often do we sing about what God has done for us?  Do you praise him as you ought for bringing us salvation?
o   Mary praises God for being able to use even someone humble, and lowly like her.  Do you recognize God’s ability and thank him for his willingness to use even you?  Or, does your pride cause you to think that God is lucky to have you on his side?
-          What God has done for the world
o   Mary begins by stating what God has done for her, but then quickly shifts to what he has done for the world.
o   When praising God, do you spend most of your time thanking God for what he has done in your life, or do you also include what he has done for our world?
o   When you speak to others of God, do you speak mostly about what he has done for you, or what he has done for the world?
Look for opportunities to praise the faith and faithfulness of others.
Praise God for what he has done for you, despite your imperfections.
Pray for the ability to remain humble, for it is the humble to whom God gives grace.

The Vineyard- November 29, 2015

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Luke 1:26-38
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          Who, Me?
o   Mary wonders why the angel Gabriel would address her by saying “the Lord is with you.”
o   Mary was not whom most people would choose to be an instrument of God’s grace, a single woman, likely poor, from out in the country.
o   God’s choice of Mary is evidence of his penchant for using people not because they are likely candidates or perfect people, but faithful ones.
o   What about your own life might cause you to be surprised at God’s use of you in his plans?
-          Yes, Me!
o   Once Mary understands her chosen role, and the grace that God has shown her in inviting her into his plan, she enthusiastically proclaims herself to be God’s servant, or slave.
o   Do you see being used by God has a form of God’s grace?
o   When you realize that God can use you, that he wants to use you, what is your response?
o   Do you give yourself over to God’s calling as enthusiastically as Mary did?
-          Who, Us?
o   Sometimes we read the Bible as if the people in it lived in a special time.  While they did witness many things we would love to see for ourselves, God expects as much of us as he did of them.
o   Mary made great sacrifices, daily sacrifices, to fulfill God’s plan.  What sacrifices do you make to fulfill God’s plan?
Praise God for allowing us, even us, to take part in his divine plan.
Pray for the ability to enthusiastically embrace God’s calling in your life.
Pray for discernment to discover God’s calling in your life.

The Vineyard- November 22nd, 2015
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Genesis 50:1-26
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          We are Freed from Guilt
o   At least a few decades have passed since Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery, and yet with the death of their father they are still afraid that he will seek revenge.
o   How does living with guilt hinder our relationships with others?
o   Have you allowed God to free you from feelings of guilt because of past sins?
-          God is in Control
o   The story of Joseph is one that demonstrates quite remarkably God’s ability to bring something good out of the evil actions of humanity.
o   Even when it appeared God had lost control, when his Son was on the cross, God was using the violence of the cross to achieve our salvation.
o   What are some negative situations that God has brought positive blessings out of in your life?
o   Do you trust that God is in control?
o   Do you trust God to sort everything out in the end?
-          God has a Future for Us
o   Joseph made his brothers swear that his bones would be taken back to Canaan when the family of Israel returned there.
o   This shows that Joseph believed God had a future for them, and he knew where that future was.
o   Do you believe that God has a future for you, even after death?
o   Do your actions reflect that your future is with God, and not in this world?
Pray that God will release from you the burden of guilt from any past sins that you continue to bear.
Pray that God will give you the faith to trust in him, and the fact that he is in control.
Examine your priorities.  Are they based on this present world, or the future God has prepared for you?
