The Vineyard

The Cross

Pray that God will speak to you through the reading of His word.

-          The Price of the Cross

o   Why does forgiveness have a price?

o   Why was the price of our forgiveness Jesus’ death on the cross?

o   On the cross, Jesus took our punishment upon Himself.  As Isaiah says, “he was crushed for our iniquities.”  What does that tell you about the nature of God?

-          The Pattern of the Cross

o   It is challenging to risk your life, even for a good person.  And yet, Christ died for us, sinners.  How does this reveal God’s love to us?

o   Jesus stood condemned in our place, so we could stand righteous in His.  Would you be willing to bear someone else’s punishment, as Christ has born ours?

o   How did Christ defeat violence and death on the cross?

-          The Tragedy of the Cross

o   It would be a tragedy for Christ to give His life for you, only to have you refuse to give your life to Him.  Does your life make the cross a tragedy?

Pray for courage to follow the pattern that Jesus has left us. 

Pray that we all might give our lives to Christ.

Religion and the Gospel

Pray that God will speak to you through the reading of His word.

-          Avoiding Jesus

o   One way to avoid Jesus is to refuse to make Him your Lord.  In what ways are you holding on to control of your life?

o   Another way to avoid Jesus is to refuse to allow Him to be your Savior.  In what ways are you still trying to “earn” God’s forgiveness?

-          The Only Way to Embrace Jesus

o   We often try to come to God on our own terms.  We feel like if we obey, we will be accepted.  Instead, our obedience should be motivated by the fact that God accepts us because of what Jesus did on the cross.  Is your obedience to God motivated by a desire to win God’s acceptance, or is it motivated by God’s grace in accepting us through Jesus Christ?

-          The Challenge of Grace

o   Many feel like if we make too much of grace, people will feel like their actions no longer matter.  However, when grace is rightly understood, it motivates us in a way the law never could.  Why is love a greater motivating force than the law?

Pray for the courage to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

Pray that our obedience will be motivated by grace.

Sin

Pray that God will speak to you through the reading of His word.

-          The Problem

o   Who does the problem of sin affect?  How do our sins affect others?  How others sins affect us?

o   What is the problem of sin?  What are some of the things that we worship, that fall short of the glory of God?

o   Why are we tempted to sin?  What makes the lies we believe that lead us into sin so attractive?

-          The Solution

o   Who is the only one capable of redeeming us from the problem we have created because of our sinfulness?  Why is Jesus the only one who can save us?

o   What was it that Jesus had to do so that we might be forgiven?  What price did He have to pay?

o   Why is the “freedom” the world offers insufficient?  What are the wages of sin?  What is the free gift of God?

Ask God to cleanse our hearts of our sinful nature. 

Praise God for sending Jesus to be the solution to our sin problem.

Knowing God

Pray that God will speak to you through the reading of His word.

-          Knowing the Best

o   We often use words like “best” to describe people, but God is the best manifestation of everything that is good.  What is it like to think about God is the best of all that is good?

-          Knowing What’s Important

o   How do we think of ourselves?  What do we think it is that makes us important?  What do you brag about?

o   The prophet Jeremiah says that the thing that is really worth boasting about is knowing God.  Is your identity found in knowing God?

-          Knowing Eternal Life

o   If we know Jesus Christ, then we know God.  If we know God, then we have eternal life.  Do you recognize God as the only source of eternal life?  Do you know Jesus Christ, who is our source of knowledge for who God is?

Praise God for being the perfect manifestation of power, beauty, love, and all that is good. 

Ask God to help you prioritize, so that your life is defined by your knowledge of Him. 

Praise God for our ability to know Him, and have eternal life through Jesus Christ.

Signposts to God

Pray that God will speak to you through the reading of His word.

-          God is the Beginning

o   Why is it necessary for there to be a beginning of the universe? 

o   Why is it necessary that the beginning involve God? 

o   What does it tell us about God that he was able to create the entire universe?

-          God the Designer

o   How is God’s intelligent design evident in creation?

o   What about humanity points to the fact that we were designed?  What about the universe points to its design?

-          God Determines Good and Evil

o   If God did not exist, how would we determine good and evil?

o   How does our conscience point to the existence of God?

Praise God for his remarkable power in creating the universe. 

Praise God for the beauty of his design, evident in all creation. 

Pray that the knowledge of good and evil, our conscience, will direct us into the will of God.
