The Vineyard- January 24, 2016

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Luke 4:1-13
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-         Conquering Hunger
o   Hunger can lead us astray, because we hunger for a lot of things.
o   When you are tempted, remember that even after 40 days of fasting, Jesus didn’t allow hunger to lead him into sin.
o   How does the word of God sustain us even more than bread or physical food?
-         Embracing Service
o   Satan offered Jesus what was rightfully his, power over all the kingdoms of the earth.
o   Jesus wasn’t simply interested in getting what was his, but cared how he received it.  He would not receive it from Satan.
o   Jesus embraced a life of service rather than a life of world power.  What do we crave in our life?  Do you long for power, or to be a servant like Christ?
-         Pass the Test
o   Satan tried to get Jesus to test God, but Jesus knew that it was really him who was being tested.
o   Jesus was secure in his knowledge that he was God’s Son, and that God loved him.
o   How does being secure in our identity in Christ, and in the knowledge that God loves us help us in times of temptation?
Praise God for sustaining us with his word!
Thank God for sending Jesus among us not as someone seeking power, but as a humble servant.
Pray for security in knowing that God loves you, and for wisdom in living as God would have you to live as a Christ-follower.
Consider this verses:
“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:14-16 ESV)

The Vineyard- January 17th, 2016
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Luke 3:21-38
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          You are my beloved Son
o   When Jesus is baptized, God opens the heavens and speaks directly to him saying, “You are my beloved Son.”
o   What does it mean to you that the Son of God took on human flesh, so he could live with us?
o   What type of humility must it have taken for Jesus to be willing to leave heaven and come to earth?
-          God is one of Us
o   Jesus goes down to the Jordan to be baptized, despite never having sinned.  He does it because Jesus wants to share in our experience, even when he doesn’t have to, even when he doesn’t need to.
o   What does it mean to you that Jesus seeks to identify with you?  What does it mean to have a high priest who sympathizes with our weaknesses?
-          Descendent of Adam
o   Jesus’ family tree links him not only to Abraham, but also to Adam.  This is to show that Jesus is the Messiah to not only the Jews, the children of Abraham, but to all mankind.
o   How does this show that God loves all mankind?
o   If Jesus came to save all mankind, what does that tell you about God’s love for each of us?
Praise God for sending us his Son!
Jesus came and identified himself with us, by experience life as a human.  Pray for the courage to identify yourself with him, so that you might experience eternal life.
Consider these verses:
“What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” (Romans 6:1-4 ESV)

“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20 ESV)

The Vineyard- January 10, 2016

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Luke 3:1-20
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          What Does Repentance Look Like
o   Repentance is an exalting of the humble, and a humbling of the exalted.  Spiritually, are you humble before God, or are you over-confident in your own righteousness?
o   Repentance is a turning, away from the world and ourselves and toward God.  What do you need to turn away from?  How might you turn toward God?
o   Repentance is asking the question, “what should we do?”  We live different lives, and so repentance will take shape in various forms in each of our lives.  Repentance might mean being more honest and fair, renouncing our attempts to control others, loving our neighbor, renouncing things that have become more of a priority than God, entrusting our lives to God and seeking forgiveness from him, or even admitting that we were wrong.  What form might repentance take in your life?
o   Repentance is focusing more on God and others than ourselves.  John tells the crowd to share with those in need.  What do we have that we could share with others?  We keeps us from being generous towards others?
-          Confronted by Christ
o   All of us will have to stand before Christ and look him in the face one day.
o   When we stand before Christ, will he look at our life and see the fruits of repentance, will he see within us a contrite heart?
o   Or, will Christ see someone who bore no spiritual fruit, someone whose life was lived in futility, pursuing the things of the world instead of a relationship with him?
Pray earnestly for God to reveal to you areas in your life where repentance is needed.
Examine your heart and ask yourself this question, “am I ready to stand before Christ?”
If as a follower of Christ, you find yourself truly repentant, pray these words from scripture:

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.” (Psalm 51:10-12 ESV)

The Vineyard- January 3, 2016
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Luke 2:41-52
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          Don’t Assume Jesus is with Us
o   Joseph and Mary left Jerusalem assuming that Jesus was with them, which was a natural assumption to make.
o   How often do we as Christians make decisions assuming that Jesus supports what we decide?
-          Jesus Teaches Us, We Don’t Teach Him
o   How often do we make a decision, and then go to the Bible looking for support?
o   Instead, shouldn’t we go to the Bible first, and allow it to inform our decision?
o   Jesus ability to teach us reveals something about who he is, the Son of God.
-          Jesus is Where God is at Work
o   When Joseph and Mary return to Jerusalem, they find Jesus in the Temple “about his Father’s business.”
o   If we are wondering where Jesus is, if we are searching for him in our life, we should spend time in prayer, in the word, and in worship around the Lord’s Table.
o   We will find Jesus in those places where God is at work in our world.

Carefully consider decisions you make, don’t assume Jesus would make the same decisions you make.
Seek guidance from God’s word first, rather than going to God’s word as an afterthought.

Pray that God will be at work in us, and that Christ will be glorified in our lives.
