Pray that God will speak to you through the reading of His word.

-          “Do It Yourself”

o   Whereas Abraham’s servant was guided by prayer, Jacob seems to take a do-it-yourself approach when finding a wife.  What times in your life should you have allowed prayer to guide you?

-          From Perpetrator to Victim

o   When we choose to live by trickery and deceit, we make ourselves more vulnerable to falling victim to those things.  Are you living a life of integrity, or is your life built on deception and dishonesty?

-          Focusing on the Future

o   Despite his failings, Jacob shows a remarkable ability to persevere and focus on the future.  Rather than wallow in the past, he focuses on what needs to be done to secure the future.  How might we benefit from focusing on the future?

Utilize prayer more when making significant decisions. 

Ask God to reveal to you patterns of behavior in your life that need to change. 

Pray for the strength to trust God with the past, and focus on the future in faith.

-          Finding Faith on the Journey

o   Jacob has left his home and is still far from his destination of Paddan-Aram, when he encounters God.  What unexpected places have you encountered God?  

-          God’s Promises

o   God makes definite promises to Jacob.  He will be with Jacob, keep Jacob, and return Jacob to the land.  God promises to be our shepherd as well.  How have you experienced God’s presence and protection in your life? 

-          The House of God

o   Jacob names the place where he encounters God Bethel, or “house of God.”  In the New Testament, we learn that in Jesus the fullness of deity was pleased to dwell.  How have you experienced God through Jesus Christ?

Pray that our eyes will be open to experiencing God in unexpected places. 

Praise God for being our shepherd. 

Thank God for allowing us to experience Him through Jesus Christ.

Pray that God will speak to you through the reading of His word.

-          Discerning the will of God

o   Rebekeh had received the oracle concerning Jacob’s supremacy over Esau.  However, Isaac had either never heard about it, or refused to accept it, because he seeks to make Esau supreme.  Why is it critical to discern the will of God together?

-          The Key of Communication

o   It’s possible that Rebekeh didn’t communicate the oracle concerning Jacob to Isaac.  We know that Isaac didn’t communicate his intentions concerning the blessing to Jacob.  How are problems avoided when we communicate effectively?

-          The Dangers of Dishonesty

o   Jacob uses dishonesty to gain the blessing of his father.  How might Jacob of done things differently?

Pray that we will seek to discern God’s will together, so that we can work together towards the same goal. 

Consider how you might better communicate with others. 

Pray for the integrity to be honest in all things.
