The Vineyard- August 25, 2013

The Vineyard
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Matthew 28:16-20
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          Baptism
o   How does baptism identify us with the life of Christ?
o   Many people think of baptism as a type of wedding ceremony, a way that we make vows to be faithful to Christ.  How faithful have you been to the commitment you made at baptism?
-          Christ’s Commandments
o   Jesus said that becoming a disciple is a process that involves baptism, AND learning his commandments.  When you were baptized, did you make a commitment to learn and follow the commandments of Christ?
o   If you never followed through with learning and following the commandments of Christ, what can you do to rectify that?
Pray that we will always remember our baptism, and the fact that we are now identified with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.

Pray that we will be true disciples, and commit ourselves to learning and following the commandments of Christ.

The Vineyard- August 18, 2013

The Vineyard

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Matthew 3.13-17

Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.

Read the passage.

-          Jesus Identifies with Us

o   What does it mean to have a Savior who has experienced the same things we have?

o   What example does Jesus set for us in his own baptism?

-          The Trinity

o   The Trinity isn’t a word you find in the Bible, but it refers to the three persons of the Godhead: God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

o   What do you find each person of the Godhead doing during Jesus’ baptism?

o   How are they working together, despite having different roles?

Pray for that just as Jesus identifies with us, that we might be able to identify with others, and minister to them as Christ ministers to us.

Consider the way that the three person of the Godhead work together to achieve one purpose.  Pray that your heart will be so unified with God, that you will work with God to achieve his desired will for your life.

The Vineyard- August 11, 2013

The Vineyard
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Acts 12.1-24
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          James- Dying for Christ
o   Do you think you would have had the courage James had, to die for Christ?
o   James died physically, but is his life really over?
-          Peter- Living for Christ
o   If confronted with a situation like Peter, could you display the same amount of calm and assurance?
o   What do you think Peter had learned from Jesus, and from his past experiences?
o   Peter is freed to live, but he continues to live not for himself, but for Christ.  What does that tell you about our allegiance, and our priorities?
-          Herod- Dying for Self
o   Like many rulers, Herod always sought his own glory.  When he died, what happened to his glory, his power, and his wealth?
Pray for those in our world today, who like James, will lose their life for the sake of Christ.
Pray for those in our world like Peter, who through imprisonment and persecution continue to glorify God.
Pray for those like Herod, who are living for themselves.  Pray that they, and that we ourselves, will recognize the wisdom in living and dying for God, rather than ourselves.

The Vineyard- August 4, 2013

The Vineyard
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

Acts 11.1-30
Pray for God to speak to you through the reading of His word.
Read the passage.
-          Accurately Named?
o   Assuming that the name Christian means someone who follows Christ, is it accurate to call you a Christian?
-          A Working Title
o   Did you know that Christ is actually a title, and not a proper name?  It is the Greek word for “Messiah”, or “Anointed”.
o   That being the case, we are named not after Jesus’ name, but his function as Messiah, the one anointed to bring salvation.  In what ways do we see our following Christ as an occupation, rather than just a name we wear?
-          Putting Others First
o   When the Christians of Antioch hear of an impending natural disaster, their first thought is how they might help others.  How were these Christ-followers imitating Christ with their attitude?
Pray that when someone refers to us as a Christian, it will be an accurate description of us as ones who follow Christ.
Pray that we will see being a Christian not just as a name, but as a calling.

Pray that we will put others first just as Jesus did.
