The Vineyard

Colossians 2:6-15

Pray that God will speak to you through the reading of His word.

-          Setting Down Roots

o   Paul encourages the Colossians to set down roots, to build a foundation on Christ.  When we are rooted deep in Christ, we are far less susceptible to the winds of public opinion.  Have you made an effort to root your life in Christ, so that you can stand firm in Him?

-          Identifying with Christ

o   Our baptism is a symbol of our identity in Christ.  It reminds us that God has accomplished our redemption through the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ.  Do you seek to identify with Christ, and pattern your life after His?

-          The Final Nail in the Coffin

o   God took the indictment against us, the sins that robbed us of our relationship with Him, and he nailed them to the cross of Christ.  Do you believe in God’s triumph over sin and death through the power of the cross? 

Pray that we will set down roots in Christ, anchoring ourselves in the will of God. 

Pray that we will seek to identify ourselves with Christ, and that our baptism will be a reminder of the life we have in Him. 

Pray that we will have faith in the triumph of God over sin and death.

The Vineyard

Colossians 1:24-2:5

Pray that God will speak to you through the reading of His word.

-          Laboring for Others

o   Even though Paul had never met the Colossians, he says that he is laboring even for them.  How might we be of service to Christians whom we may never meet?  How are we serving the universal church?

-          The Treasure of Christ

o   Paul uses words like “riches” and “treasures” to refer to Christ, and learning more about Christ.  The implication is that the more we learn of Christ, the richer we are for it.  Are you continuing to learn more about Christ?

-          Are you Maturing?

o   Paul’s goal is to be able to present the Colossian Christian as mature.  In other words, he doesn’t simply seek to convert people to Christ, but also wants them to grow in Christ.  Have you grown in your faith in Christ since you first became a Christian?  If not, why?

Pray that we will labor for the good of others in the Kingdom of God, even if we never get to meet them face to face. 

Pray that we will develop a passion for Christ, and make Him our treasure in life. 

Pray that we will all mature and grow in Christ.

Pray that God will speak to you through the reading of His word.

-          Christ the Creator

o   Jesus’ ministry didn’t begin on earth.  Jesus has existed for all eternity as God, and was present at the beginning as God’s agent of creation.  How often do you consider that Christ didn’t just die for you, he also created you?

-          Christ the Redeemer

o   As the one who created you, Jesus knows you better than you know yourself.  What does it mean to you that even though Christ knows all your secrets, all your failures, all the things you never said, all the thoughts you were ashamed of thinking; what does it means to you that even knowing all that, he still choose to die for you?

-          “You are Here”

o   After telling us a lot about Christ, Paul then turns to tell us a lot about ourselves.  Have you truly allowed Christ to ransom you from your old way of thinking, acting, and living? 

Pray that we will honor Christ as his creation, and live our lives according to his will. 

Pray that we will appreciate the great cost of our redemption.    

Pray that we will see others as Christ has seen us, people of great worth.

Colossians 1:1-14

Pray that God will speak to you through the reading of His word.

-          Being “in Christ”

o   Paul speaks of the Colossians as being “in Christ, at Colossae.”  Their theological location is what really defines them, whereas their geographical location is more happenstance.  What do we allow to define us more, our identity in Christ, or where we live?

-          The Gospel as God’s Story

o   Paul speaks of the gospel as coming to the Colossians, and then speaks of all that God has done, and will continue to do in their life.  Do we understand the gospel as the story of how Christ met us where we were?  Do we appreciate all that God has done, and will do in our lives?

-          Finding Forgiveness

o   There is one source of forgiveness, and that is the blood of Christ.  Have we allowed the reality of that truth to shape our gratitude toward God, and the grace we extend to others?

Pray that we will be shaped by our identity in Christ.

Pray that we will gain a greater appreciation of gospel and its importance in our lives. 

Pray that our love for Christ, the source of our forgiveness, will continue to grow.
